Identify the awning and its controls
Manual, power, and slide-topper awnings use different mechanisms. Read the awning maker’s instructions for extending, retracting, tension, and cleaning. Locate the override procedure before a motor or power problem leaves the awning extended.
Keep people clear of arms and moving hardware. Springs and tensioned components can injure you if disassembled without training.
Clean the fabric gently
Brush off loose grit, then use a cleaner approved for the fabric or vinyl. Work on both sides if the manufacturer permits it, rinse well, and let the awning dry before long-term storage. Avoid pressure washing or scrubbing coatings away.
If rain forces you to retract a wet awning, extend it to dry as soon as conditions allow. Persistent moisture can promote mildew and stains.
Inspect hardware and mounting
Look for loose or damaged brackets, torn fabric, cracked end caps, rubbing, uneven extension, and wiring damage on powered models. Check the wall mounting area for water stains.
Do not tighten fasteners blindly into a soft wall. That can conceal water damage; have the structure inspected first.
Respond to wind and rain
Retract an awning before strong wind or severe weather. Tilt and support only as the awning manufacturer directs; pooling water adds substantial load. Sensors and automatic retraction features are aids, not a reason to leave an awning unattended in bad weather.
Add it to the trip routine
Before driving, confirm the awning is fully retracted and locked. During storage, inspect the rolled edge and hardware. Keep a note of model, fabric type, and parts so repairs match the unit.
