Before you begin: Use your RV and component manuals for model-specific procedures. Stop and use a qualified professional for electrical, propane, structural, or other work beyond your training.
Start with the chassis, not the coach brochure
The chassis and engine maker sets the service schedule for oil, filters, coolant, transmission, belts, and other powertrain work. Keep that manual alongside the coach manual. Note whether each task is due by time, mileage, engine hours, or operating conditions.
A motorhome that spends long periods parked may still have time-based service needs. Conversely, a high-mileage traveler may reach mileage triggers first. Follow whichever trigger your manual specifies.
Check fluids and leaks before travel
With the engine off and according to the chassis instructions, check fluid levels and look beneath the vehicle for new leaks. Note unusual smells, stains, or low fluid. Do not open a hot cooling system.
Use only the specified fluid types. Mixing incompatible coolant or transmission fluids can cause damage, so verify the specification before topping off.
Inspect air, cooling, and starting systems
A restricted air filter, damaged intake, cooling-system leak, weak starting battery, or corroded connection can turn a trip into a breakdown. Inspect what the manual allows owners to access and have scheduled service performed by the appropriate shop.
Diesel motorhomes can have additional fuel, emissions, and air-system procedures. Do not generalize a gas-engine checklist to a diesel chassis.
Respond to warning signs promptly
Overheating, low oil pressure, abnormal exhaust smoke, loss of power, unusual vibration, or a warning light requires diagnosis. Do not reset a fault and continue driving without understanding it. A heavy RV may need specialized towing if it cannot be driven safely.
Keep chassis and coach records together
Log mileage, date, engine hours if applicable, fluid and filter specifications, service provider, and receipts. Cross-reference the house-system maintenance calendar so the complete motorhome history is in one place.
