Understand the fresh-water path
The fresh tank stores drinking water for the RV pump. Water then moves through filters, lines, fixtures, and sometimes a water heater. A taste or odor problem can start in the source water, fill hose, tank, filter, or plumbing—not just the tank.
Find the fill point, drain, vent, pump strainer, filter, and low-point drains in your RV manual before beginning maintenance.
Keep filling equipment sanitary
Use a hose and fittings reserved for potable water. Keep ends capped and off the ground, and use a suitable drinking-water source. Never connect a hose used for sewer rinsing to the fresh-water inlet.
Inspect the fill cap and vent screen for damage or contamination. Do not force water into a tank faster than the vent and fill system can handle.
Sanitize according to your manual
Manufacturers specify different sanitizing solutions, concentrations, contact times, and flushing procedures. Follow the instructions for your tank, plumbing, and water heater; bypass or remove components as directed. Do not guess a bleach ratio or mix disinfectants.
After sanitizing, flush until the procedure is complete and water is suitable for use. Replace filters on the schedule required by their maker.
Store the system deliberately
Before extended storage, follow the RV maker’s guidance on draining, drying, and winterizing. Freezing water can split fittings and equipment. After storage, inspect for leaks and sanitize before relying on the system.
A tank that sat warm with water for a long time may need attention even if the level gauge looks normal.
Troubleshoot low flow or bad taste
Check source water, hose, filter, pump strainer, and visible leaks in that order. If the pump runs without building pressure, stop and investigate rather than letting it run dry. A persistent odor after proper sanitation may require inspection of lines or the water heater.
