Read the generator manual and hour meter
Built-in RV generators differ in fuel type, oil specification, filters, break-in procedure, and service interval. Log engine hours and dates; many tasks are due by whichever comes first. A portable generator has a separate set of rules and should never be operated in an enclosed RV compartment.
Use the model and serial number to find the correct manual and replacement parts.
Inspect before starting
Check for fuel or oil leaks, loose parts, blocked exhaust, damaged wiring, and proper compartment ventilation. Verify the exhaust path is clear of people, windows, and neighboring campers. Carbon monoxide can enter an RV even when a generator is outside.
Test CO alarms according to their manual. Never run a generator in a garage, enclosed space, or with unsafe exhaust routing.
Exercise as the maker directs
Some manufacturers recommend running a stored generator periodically under a suitable electrical load. The exact frequency, load, and duration depend on the model. Follow that guidance rather than idling briefly and assuming it was exercised.
If the generator surges, stalls, smokes, or trips protection, stop and diagnose the cause. Repeated restarts can worsen a fault.
Do scheduled service
Oil, filters, spark plugs, fuel system, coolant, or belts may need attention depending on the unit. Follow the maker’s procedure and environmental rules for used fluids. A service professional should handle work beyond your training.
Keep intake and cooling openings unobstructed. Clean the exterior only when the unit is shut down and cool.
Plan for storage and return to service
Fuel storage, battery care, and cold-weather needs vary by fuel and generator design. Record the last run and service date. Before a trip, start the unit and test a normal load so problems surface at home.
